Position Description

Receive, store, and issue materials, equipment, and other items from stockroom, warehouse, or storage yard. Keep records and compile stock reports.


General Duties

  • Receive and count stock items, and record data manually or using a computer.
  • Pack and unpack items to be stocked in stockrooms, warehouses, or storage yards.
  • Verify inventory computations by comparing them to physical counts of stock, and investigate discrepancies or adjust errors.
  • Store items in an orderly and accessible manner in warehouses, tool rooms, supply rooms, or other areas.
  • Mark stock items using identification tags, stamps, electronic marking tools, or other labeling equipment.
  • Clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Determine proper storage methods, identifications, and stock location based on turnover, environmental factors, and physical capabilities of facilities.
  • Examine and inspect stock items for wear or defects, reporting any damage to supervisors.
  • Dispose of damaged or defective items, or return them to vendors.
  • Advise retail customers or internal users on the appropriateness of parts, supplies, or materials requested.
  • Confer with purchasing personnel and vendors regarding stock procurement and availability.
  • Recommend disposal of excess, defective, or obsolete stock.
  • Confer or correspond with establishment representatives to rectify problems, such as damages, shortages, or nonconformance to specifications.
  • Deliver or route materials to departments using hand truck, conveyor, or sorting bins.
  • Requisition and store shipping materials and supplies to maintain inventory of stock.
  • Attach identifying tags to containers or mark them with identifying information.
  • Direct spouts and position receptacles, such as bins, carts, or containers so they can be loaded.
  • Maintain equipment storage areas to ensure that inventory is protected.
  • Distribute work orders to departments.
  • Review documents and work orders to determine materials requirements or material priorities.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required and assigned.


Specific Duties

  • Prepare and maintain records and reports of inventories, shortages, shipments, or expenditures.
  • Determine sequence and release of back orders according to stock availability.
  • Examine shipment contents and compare with records such as manifests, invoices, or orders to verify accuracy.
  • Record shipment data, damages, or discrepancies for reporting, accounting, or recordkeeping purposes.
  • Oversee files for work orders, warranty orders, service orders, and internal installed sales orders to release when material is received.
  • Confer with department supervisors or other personnel to assess progress and discuss needed changes.
  • Confer with establishment personnel, vendors, or customers to coordinate production or shipping activities and to resolve complaints or eliminate delays.
  • Contact suppliers to verify shipment details.


Areas of Experience

  • Knowledge of general business computer software and aptitude to learn new applications.
  • Minimum of three (3) years in relevant warehouse experience



  • High School Diploma, GED or Associate's Degree required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


Job Requirements

  • Willing to obtain other training if deemed necessary in performance of responsibilities and continuing education

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and physical

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Good physical ability
  • May occasionally lift/push/pull up to 100 pounds
  • May occasionally need to reach at or above shoulder level and below waist
  • Able to spend extended periods on their feet or walking
  • At times, work is in a warehouse setting and may be performed within a production environment, subject to temperature variations, hazardous chemicals, mechanical parts, increased noise levels and dust.
